I was head hunted in South Africa in 2001 by an Irish company and after immigrating in September that year and have not looked back since.
After a long process, I received my naturalization on the 1st April 2012. You can imagine when I received the letter saying that the ceremony is on the 1st of April I was like yes April Fools. But no it went ahead and I became the proud owner of an Irish passport.
During the time before receiving my citizenship I studied, firstly getting my ECDL as it was important to have this basic skill, I then studied to be a trainer and then moved on the study for my Higher Diploma in Security Management.
In 2009 I had a health scare and had to move in a new direction. I had to decide what I wanted to do with the rest of my life and so I studied to become an Accounting Technician.
So what is an accounting technician? You may ask. I always get asked and the easiest way to explain this is that an Accountant is a like surgeon specialised in business and an Accounting Technician is your general practitioner.
I studied for two years and finished in the top 90 of the country. After my studies, I worked for an accounting firm based in Sandyford and it left me with the feeling that I want to work for myself so in 2013 I became my own boss. It was a long and hard road but I did it with a lot of support.
I am a full member of Accounting Technicians Ireland.
Where did it all start
AJ Accounting & Tax Services was born in 2013. In 2014 I went legit with the back to work scheme, I received money and assistance from my Local County Council and here I am the proud owner of a growing business.
We have come a long way since our first client to almost 50 in the last 4 years. We and are still growing and still keep that personal touch with all our clients that we are known for. We do many things at AJAATS.
From daily books, tax, vat, payroll and business registration, many of my clients believe I have a direct line to the Revenue and CRO and we do. However, like everything else it takes work to keep that communication going and by listening to our clients it helps us develop an understanding of what people need. It’s also about letting go and knowing when to step back and let people do their own thing in their business.
We at AJ Accounting are big enough to get the job done but small enough to care and that is very important to us because if our clients succeed we succeed.
